How one company survived the pandemic in the printing industry

Jerry Freund, President of MidAmerican Printing Systems in Chicago, talks about using an innovative approach to survive the pandemic amid job losses and industry-wide bankruptcies.

Chicago, Illinois — Jerry Freund, president of Chicago-based MidAmerican Printing Systems, has been proactive and adapting to the pandemic faster than the competition. The shift was to pandemic-related products, supplying customers with PPE and signage. MidAmerican Print needed to think beyond large format printing, which has always been the core of its commercial printing service, and focus on direct mail marketing materials such as brochures, postcards and flyers.

As the competition shut down, MidAmerican Printing Systems had to adapt to a rapidly changing landscape to keep the company afloat. While MidAmerican Print Systems survived the 2008 recession, the 2020 pandemic was “very different,” according to Jerry Freund, whose focus has always been on improving communications, which saved the company. Open communication, and comparatively better communication, helped the company quickly transition to offering a very different way of printing and in a very different way.

“I don’t think we’re going to see a return to normal, at least not the normal we used to have. It may take a few years, but in the meantime we will continue to serve our customers’ needs. We will continue to provide them (customers) with everything they need, making the process so personal and at the same time fast.” said Jerry Freund, President of MidAmerican Printing Systems.

He added, “We continue to print a large amount of COVID-19 related collateral for customers such as floor graphics, sneeze guards, outdoor advertising signs, window graphics, etc., all of which are needed to protect customers. However, with shops not opening, this type of work is also declining. I think the new requirement for many of our customers will be promotions so they can go back to pre-lockdown sales and marketing levels.”
